Our Beliefs

What we believe. The basics every volunteer agrees on, each with Scripture under it.

Monumental Grace isn't a church. We're a ministry that helps people who are struggling with suicide, and we help believers get grounded in the Bible so they can help the people around them. So this isn't a full doctrinal statement. It's the basics… the things every one of us has to agree on to serve together. Every point has Scripture under it. If we couldn't back it from the Bible, we didn't put it here.

1 The Bible

We believe the Bible is God's Word. All of it is true, and it's the final authority for what we believe and how we serve.

All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped, having been thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (LSB)

The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments is everlasting.

Psalm 119:160 (LSB)

2 One God, three Persons

We believe in one God who exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Matthew 28:19 (LSB)

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

2 Corinthians 13:14 (LSB)

3 Jesus is God in the flesh

We believe Jesus Christ is God who became a man. Fully God, fully man.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14 (LSB)

4 Jesus died, rose, and is coming back

We believe Jesus died for our sins, was buried, rose bodily on the third day, and will return the same way He left.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (LSB)

They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

Acts 1:11 (LSB)

5 Sin

We believe every one of us has sinned, and sin earns death. Nobody climbs out of that on their own.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:23 (LSB)

For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23 (LSB)

6 Salvation

We believe salvation is a gift. It comes by God's grace, through faith in Jesus Christ, with repentance. Not by being good enough.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (LSB)

solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 20:21 (LSB)

7 The gospel has to be told

We believe people can't call on a Savior they've never heard about. That's why we go to people instead of waiting for them to find us.

How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?

Romans 10:14 (LSB)

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

Romans 1:16 (LSB)

8 The Holy Spirit and His gifts

We believe the Holy Spirit lives in every believer, and He gives each of us gifts. The gifts are for serving other people, not for showing off.

However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

Romans 8:9 (LSB)

As each one has received a gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God

1 Peter 4:10 (LSB)

9 Tongues on post

We believe what Paul said about tongues: without someone to translate, keep it between you and God. We serve people on the worst night of their life, and confusion is the last thing they need. So on post and in public ministry, no tongues. That's not a judgment on anyone's gift. It's Paul's rule, and it's about peace.

If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must translate; but if there is no translator, he must keep silent in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God.

1 Corinthians 14:27-28 (LSB)

for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

1 Corinthians 14:33 (LSB)

10 In the Word every day

We believe a volunteer doesn't just believe the Bible, he lives in it. God told His people to carry His words on their heart and talk about them from morning to night. So be in Scripture every day. That's what keeps us grounded when the work gets heavy, and it gets heavy.

These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (LSB)

This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way successful, and then you will be prosperous.

Joshua 1:8 (LSB)

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with gratefulness in your hearts to God.

Colossians 3:16 (LSB)

Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.

Psalm 119:11 (LSB)

11 In prayer every day

We believe prayer isn't the last resort, it's the daily rhythm. Jesus got up before dark to pray. We can pray before a post.

Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart,

Luke 18:1 (LSB)

pray without ceasing;

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (LSB)

And in the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus rose up, went out of the house, and went away to a desolate place, and was praying there.

Mark 1:35 (LSB)

12 The local church

We believe every volunteer needs a local church. We're not one and we won't act like one. This work is hard. You need people who fill you back up, correct you when you drift, and carry you through the hard nights. Your church is that. We work alongside churches, and we hand people off to them.

And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (LSB)

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2 (LSB)

13 Unity on post

We believe the gospel is worth fighting for and almost nothing else is. Volunteers don't argue secondary doctrine on post or in ministry channels: end times, baptism, church government, spiritual gifts, Bible translations, any of it. Take it to your pastor. On post we have one job.

But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s slave must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged,

2 Timothy 2:23-24 (LSB)

But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and conflicts about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.

Titus 3:9 (LSB)

That's it. If you can say yes to all thirteen, you can stand a post with us.
