Guard Duty

Your post is the person next to you.

Monumental Grace started with guard duty. The idea was simple: stand a post at the places people go when they’ve decided to end it, and be there first.

Everybody loved the idea. Almost nobody signed up. The honest reason I kept hearing was “I’m not trained for that.” Fair enough. Nobody felt ready to walk up to a stranger on a cliff.

So guard duty changed shape. It didn’t go away. The post moved.

Your post is the person next to you. The guy at church who went quiet. The coworker who stopped joking. The kid who says he’s fine. Most people who are struggling never go near a cliff. They sit in a pew, a break room, a kitchen. If you’re a believer, you’re already standing a post. The only question is whether you’re on watch.

That’s what these pages are for. The General Orders tell you what the post requires. The Armor of God is how you stay standing. Sharing the Gospel is what you say when it’s time. Read them, get in the Word every day, and keep your eyes open.

If you see something

If you’re worried about somebody, don’t wait for proof. Do this:

  1. Ask directly. “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” Asking does not put the idea in their head.
  2. Stay with them. Do not leave them alone. Listen more than you talk.
  3. Keep them safe. If you can do it safely, put distance between them and anything they could use to hurt themselves.
  4. Call together. Call or text 988 with them. If they are in danger, call 911.
  5. Follow up. Check in tomorrow, and the day after.
